About Guyana

Guyana is a wondrous country just above Brazil and just to the East of Venezuela. It’s just a little smaller than Oregon in size with a population of just under 800,000 people. The friendly and gorgeous people are made up of Indian, African, Amerindian, Chinese, Portuguese, and Mixed-Ethnicities. Everything from the varied cultures is affirmatively represented individually and as a whole such as our food intertwining so beautifully.

Our ethnic diversity is a product of colonization. First the Dutch for more than a century, then the French for two years (establishing Longchamps as the caption soon to be renamed Georgetown), and finally the British until Guyana gains its independence from 1964 - 1967.

As it was a British colony before gaining its independence, the official language of Guyana is English, although everyone speaks Guyanese Creole. It’s the only country in South America with the official language as English, otherwise Hindustani, Amerindian, Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch, and French are spoken as well.

Home to Anaconda, Harpy Eagles, Jaguars, and Black Caiman; Guyana boasts one of the most diverse places on Earth. 87% of Guyana is a tropical rainforest, which is a sanctuary for over 148 amphibians, 176 reptiles, 225 mammals, 874 bird species, and over 8,000 species of fauna. The terrain goes from As having numerous tropical rainforests including part of the Amazon, and many others including the pristine Iwokrama Rainforest.

The coastline of Guyana includes such wonders as Shell Beach, 90+ miles of pristine coastline where beaches are littered with shells everywhere or made up completely of shells. The Atlantic Ocean is also held back from flooding Guyana (being 7 or so feet below sea level) with its manmade 280+ mile Sea Wall.
